Season 7[]

During the episode What You Don't Know Can't Hurt You, Patrick's caretaker, Felicia, phones Ethan to notify him that his father has taken a fall. Daniel Charles chauffeurs Ethan to his father's house, where Ethan does a quick examination. Upon insisting that he is fine, Ethan and Daniel leave, only to be called back in by Felicia because Patrick has collapsed.

At Kenosha Medical Center, an MRI reveals that Patrick has a brain tumor that has progressed too far to still be operable. The attending neurosurgeon reveals to Ethan that Patrick has known about the tumor for six months, but declined to have it treated.

Patrick is returned home under palliative care. When Ethan decides to try to talk to his father about why they have become estranged, Patrick gets angry and insists Ethan immediately go and take his car to a garage to have winter tires fitted.

While at the garage, Felicia phones Ethan and Daniel answers. Daniel reveals to Ethan that Patrick has passed away, and Ethan breaks down crying, deducing that his father sent him away because he did not want Ethan to watch him die.

Following his death, Ethan tended it to a man named Gerald Simmons who he believed served with Patrick in the army. This is revealed to be true after Patrick's former caretaker Felicia proceeded to clean out all of his old storage and finds a picture of them together. Ethan discovered that the man was not just a friend but the secret lover of his father.
