Background[]
Born and raised in Chicago, Il, Mitch was at one point a troubled youth who displayed excessive aggression brought on by an impulse control disorder, going so far as to put another child in a hospital. At the time, he was being treated by Daniel Charles in an inpatient setting at Cook County Juvenile, where he was heavily medicated and often restrained. This has given him an aversion to restraining methods and over-medicating psychiatric patients.
Mitch's mother has been in and out of rehab and prison his whole life and he has not been able to reconnect with her.
At the start of Season 9, Mitch has turned his life around and has become an attending physician in the Emergency Department at Gaffney after receiving his degree from Columbia University with a full scholarship.
When he discovers his childhood doctor is also working at the hospital, he does not hesitate to make it clear to Dr. Charles that he still resents him for the harsh treatment he received, and for the sudden way Dr. Charles left because his rotation was over.
Season 9[]
Row Row Row Your Boat on a Rocky Sea[]
Mitch helps treat the victims of a multi-car pileup, including a man named Harris Shorr whom Mitch notices is suffering from metabolic syndrome induced by the large quantity of mood stabilizing and anti-psychotic drugs he is on for his bipolar disorder. He decided to take the patient off one of his drugs to see if his condition improves, but the patient suffers a psychotic episode, which draws the attention of Dr. Charles who berates Mitch for his reckless decision to suddenly discontinue an important medication.
When Dr. Charles realizes Mitch is a former patient of his, the two come to a confrontation in which Mitch warns Dr. Charles not to treat him like the boy he was 20 years ago, and to not question his medical decisions.
This Town ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us[]
Mitch demonstrates the use of a twitch monitor to a group of medical students. When he suspects a patient named Allison Levine is not actually suffering from a relapse of cancer but from a fungal infection, he uses the twitch monitor to illegally and unethically obtain her consent to further treat her, despite her wish to not be intubated or resuscitated, and against her sister Neva's wishes. When Dr. Charles realizes what Mitch has done, he gives him a thinly veiled warning that obtaining a patient's consent this way could cost him his medical license, indicating that he is onto him.
What Happens in the Dark Always Comes to Light[]
While out with his friends at a bar, Mitch runs into Hannah Asher who is waiting on a first date with a man she met through a dating app. When two other patrons pass out from an overdose of cocaine laced with fentanyl, Mitch and Hannah resuscitate the patients using Narcan. Hannah's date later turns out to be a married man, and his highly pregnant wife tracks Hannah down at the hospital, and the two soon realize they have both been played. When the woman goes into labor, Mitch helps deliver the baby.
At the end of the episode, Mitch teases Hannah by saying that if she keeps using dating apps, she might miss opportunities that are right in front of her in real life.
These Are Not the Droids You Are Looking For[]
Mitch examines Sharon Goodwin's ex-husband Bert and their grandson Isaiah, after Bert accidentally fell on Isaiah. Mitch diagnoses Bert with a ligament injury. Mitch also treats a hospital pharmacy technician named Wyatt, who has been hitting on Hannah, after he is tricked into a treatment room because Hannah noticed a lesion on his penis in the unsolicited nude photo that he sent her.
I Make a Promise, I Will Never Leave You[]
Mitch treats an elderly patient named Jimmy whom he eventually realizes was forced to have a lobotomy as a child. This triggers a heavy emotional response from Mitch due to his own past with psychiatric treatment, and leads to a slight reconciliation with Dr. Charles, who apologizes again for his actions in the past.
I Told Myself That I was Done With You[]
Mitch treats one of his friends from his past, Robert "Sully" Sullivan. When he gets into the treatment room, Robert loudly calls him out. Mitch tells him to calm down and says that dropping Sully off at jail is still an option if he keeps acting this way, showing up and giving everyone a hard time. He asks him about the bar fight at the crack of dawn. He notices that Robert's a little short of breath when he coughs. Robert tries to play it off as if it were a little cough he developed over the holidays. Mitch didn't buy that, and he listened to his lungs. He decides to order bloodwork and an x-ray, just to play it safe. Robert argues that he just wanted his hand looked at and tries to say that Mitch was selling him. Mitch throws a gown at him and tells him to stay put before leaving the room, telling him that someone'll be by to image his chest and hand and to not give them a hard time.
Later in the episode, Robert's wandering outside of his room with a cigarette in his hand. Dr. Charles stops him and tells him that they can't have foot traffic out here, telling him it's hospital policy. Sully argues that he's trying to find a place to smoke and says that he can't be in that room. He tells him that Mitch will be with him any second. As Dr. Charles was leading him back to his room, Mitch walked up. Mitch asks Sully where in hell he was, telling him that he told him to stay put. Once in his room, Mitch assures Dr. Charles that he's got this, thanking him for getting Sully back into his room. Sully asks if it's time for a bedtime story, saying he's tired. Mitch tells him that he wants to set up for this. He raises his bed and tells him the results of his chest x-ray. He reveals that there's a nodule on his left lung that concerned Mitch, also noting that his white blood cell count came back low. He tells Sully that he'll need a chest CT as well as a biopsy.
Sully asks for him to explain it in English. Mitch reveals to Sully that he's in the early stages of lung cancer. Sully doesn't believe him. Mitch tells him that he knows it sounds scary, explaining that some lung cancers are treatable and that he'll refer him to an oncologist. Sully argues that he only came here to get out of jail and to get his hand patched up, saying that Mitch was now throwing the c-word at him. Mitch assures him again that he'll have an oncologist talk to him. Sully says he feels fine and says that this conversation is over. He gets up from the bed, telling Mitch that he wants out of the hospital. Mitch argues that he needs a thorough evaluation and treatment plan. Sully yells at Mitch, telling him he's done and asking where he should sign. Mitch tells him to let him at least get Ortho in here to splint his broken hand, saying the bandage is only temporary and that it shouldn't take that long.
Halfway through the episode, Mitch approaches Dr. Charles and asks him to do a capacity check on Sully. Dr. Charles asks if he's noticed any behavioral or cognitive changes in his behavior since he last connected with him. Mitch explains that he's being irrational and that he's got early lung cancer and is refusing further testing and treatment. He explains that if he lets him walk out of here, AMA, he's basically handing him a death sentence. Dr. Charles explains that refusing further testing is not really grounds for questioning somebody's decisional capacity. Mitch argues that he's got a terminal illness and won't get treatment, still claiming that he's got a problem with his decision-making capacity. Dr. Charles asks him if he would be pushing for this if it were just a regular patient. Mitch says it's the only way he can see to save his life. Dr. Charles tells him that if Sully doesn't want to pursue treatment, there's nothing they could do about it. He apologizes to Mitch, who says yeah me too ,in response before walking off.
When Sully was ready to leave, Dr. Charles assured him that they were just printing his paperwork and he would be free to go. Sully says that they can keep the paperwork and that he's out of here. Mitch tells him to knock it off, telling him to get back in bed. He argues with Mitch, saying that he's got his splint and that he's leaving. Mitch explains to him that he needs to see an oncologist. Sully tells him to shut up, saying that Mitch has his iPad and his name tag. What was he supposed to say? Mitch pleads with him, saying that he's trying to help him. Sully argues once again that he's trying to leave. He tells Mitch to move. Mitch says that if he walks out of here, it'll be the dumbest thing he's ever done, saying that he can't leave. Sully tries to push him out of his way.
The two of them start fighting and Maggie calls for security. When the fight breaks up, Dr. Charles asks Mitch if he should call Archer. Mitch tells him to give him a couple of minutes before storming into the doctor's lounge locker room. Dr. Charles walks into the locker room to find Mitch staring at himself in the mirror. Mitch argues that he's not in the mood for a lecture. He explains that there's only one way to deal with Sully. Dr. Charles asks if it's by tackling him to the ground. Mitch explains that he was trying to get the situation under control. Dr. Charles says that it looked to him like he had lost control. Mitch tells him to file a complaint. When Dr. Charles brings up Archer and Goodwin, Mitch starts to move towards the door, agreeing with him immediately. Dr. Charles asks him if he wants to lose his job. Mitch explains that he screwed up and that he was trying to look out for him. Dr. Charles says he gets that, but explains to Mitch that he doesn't want to risk his job by doing so.
Mitch explains that if he'd never left Chicago, he'd be right there with Sully at the bar, throwing down beside him. He explains that's how tight they were. Mitch wanted out of that life, so he got out. Dr. Charles asks if that's a good thing. Mitch says that's a little more complicated for the ones who feel left behind. Dr. Charles explains that, reflecting back on Mitch's previous statement, Sully might've come here because he trusts him. Mitch asks why he won't listen to him. Dr. Charles says maybe he wasn't looking for some guy in a white coat with a fancy degree; maybe he was looking for his friend. At the end of the episode, Mitch finds Sully in a bar. He approaches him, asking if the Bulls snapped their losing streak. Sully says that they lost by two in OT. Mitch asks the bartender for an old-fashioned, neat. Sully notes that's a fancy drink. Mitch jokes and says that it's better than the rotgut in his glass. Sully asks if this is some type of mouse trap. Mitch doesn't answer that question. He instead pulls an inhaler out of his jacket, setting it on the table. Sully asks if he uses this and he wakes up under a knife. Mitch explains that's something to help out with his cough. Mitch tells him that if he needs anything at all, he knows where he's hiding, it doesn't matter where or when. He tells Sully that he's got him. Sully tells him that he'll see him around, and Mitch responds back, telling him that he hoped so.
Step On A Crack and Break Your Mother's Back[]
Mitch is struggling to get through the revolving doors, due to the guy in front of him. He asks him if he could pick it up a notch. The guy says that he's messing him up. Mitch finally is able to get into the foyer, limping where Hannah Asher sees him walk in. She tells him that they missed him last night. He thanked her for the invite, explaining that he had to get up early and get his run in. She asks him if he made it a burner. He says that he only made it three miles, due to him tweaking his hamstring. He explains that he'll ice at lunch and get another five miles in tonight. She notes that it's hardcore. He admits that he can be Type A with his routines. She agrees with him, explaining that she goes to meetings and that he runs, saying that everyone all has their things. She asks him if he's hitting the floor, but he declines and says that he's going to grab a drip and get showered. She tells him that she'll see him out there before walking off.
The security guard tries to get the same guy out of the revolving door. Mitch limps over, asking what's going on. The security guard explains that the guy has been in the door forever, holding everybody up. Mitch asks if he could have a chat with him. The security guard tells him to be my guest. Mitch slowly approaches him, asking if everything's okay. The guy assures Mitch that everything's fine, and Mitch explains that there are a lot of people waiting. The guy argues that people keep pushing the door and messing up his count. Mitch questions his count, and then the security guard pulls him out of there. The guy collapses into Mitch's arms. Mitch calls for help and tells him to breathe. Later, Mitch calls in Dr. Charles. He gives him the rundown of his patient, whose name is now revealed to be Jason Davies, who had dropped his mom off for outpatient gallbladder surgery, dropping the car off but got stuck in the revolving door on the way in.
Dr. Charles questions how Jason got stuck. Mitch explains that Jason refused to exit the door until he had an even number of steps per revolution. He explains that he had a panic attack when they tried to intervene. Mitch tells Dr. Charles that he has an OCD diagnosis. Later, it's revealed, when Dr. Charles is talking with Jason's mom, that he had a heart attack. His lab work showed that there were elevated levels of troponin in his bloodstream. Mitch explains that they caught it early and that they could address it before more lasting damage could be done. Mitch says he'll need an angiogram to find the source of the blockage and potentially insert a stent. Jason asks if he had one. Mitch tells him again. Jason says that he needs to have another one. Mitch is confused and asks him to repeat it. Jason explains even numbers and symmetry.
Dr. Charles explains to Mitch later that he figured out a way to break Jason's fear and to break the delusion, but he would need Mitch's help. When Frances got out of surgery, Dr. Charles showed Jason the text he got on his phone that she's heading to post-op now. Back in Jason's room, Mitch walked out and explained to Dr. Charles that cardiology had placed one stent in his right coronary artery. He was thankful that the damage to his heart was minimal. Kai then joins the two of them and asked them if they pulled it off. Dr. Charles said that they wanted to make sure Frances was out of the woods before they shook things up, directing the question at Mitch, who agreed. Kai tells Dr. Charles that he owes him one. Dr. Charles tells him that they do, and he thanks him again.
Mitch says that there's still time to get in his run. Dr. Charles asks if he's doing it on that leg, referring to his tweaked hamstring. Mitch says he'll maybe give it a rest tonight. Dr. Charles said that was a good call, and Mitch asks if he'll see him tomorrow. Dr. Charles says you bet before Mitch walks off. As he walks down the sidewalk, Hannah pulls up next to him. She notes that he wasn't running tonight. He explains to her that he decided to give his leg a rest tonight and walk instead. Hannah says that he doesn't need to do that, and she'll give him a lift instead. He says, yeah? She assures him again and tells him to get in. When he gets in her car, he thanks her for the ride. She's quiet for a second before she offers that they could go to her place and have epic herbal tea. Mitch says, wow, epic, how could he refuse? She laughs and says, you can't before pulling away from the curb.
A Penny For Your Thoughts, Dollar For Your Dreams[]
Mitch is asked by Dr. Charles to treat Liliana's brother, Pawel, for a dislocated shoulder. As he's walking with Dr. Charles to where Pawel is, Hannah asks him how his hamstring is. He tells her that it's still a little tight, but he thanks her for asking. When he reduces the dislocation, he says that should do it. Mitch explains that he'll keep it iced to reduce the swelling and that he will be back in a bit to check on him. When Mitch returns, Pawel claims that he can't make a fist. Mitch tells him that it could happen sometimes when you dislocate a shoulder and that it could put a stretch on a nerve. Pawel argues that it didn't feel like this when he came in. Mitch suspects that it'll improve as the swelling goes down. Mitch tells him that if it doesn't get better by next week, he could come back in and Mitch said he'll take a look at it.
Pawel asks for a prescription for the pain. Mitch says that it'll be sitting next to his discharge papers. Pawel thanks him, and then Mitch leaves the room. He tells Dr. Charles that Pawel's good to go. Dr. Charles asks him if Pawel's x-rays were consistent with the claim of him slipping on the ice this morning. Mitch asks him, versus what? Dr. Charles says something more intentional. Mitch questions if Pawel did this to himself or if someone did it for him. Dr. Charles says he doesn't know. Mitch explains to him that he wouldn't be able to tell from the x-rays. He questioned Dr. Charles why he asked, and Dr. Charles says that Pawel went through a tough time a little while ago. Mitch nods his head, and Dr. Charles thanks him for treating his girlfriend's brother.
Later in the episode, Nancy announces that they have a cord prolapse. Mitch walks into the room, putting hand sanitizer on, and asks Hannah what he should do. She asks him if he's ever dealt with a prolapse before. He tells her no. She tells him to glove up and what exactly she says to do. She explains that they'll have to swap places. He gets closer to her, and she tells him to slide his hand in next to hers. She says that they'll meet at the head, so they don't compress the cord. Mitch announces that he's there, and then asks Hannah what he does now. She tells him not to move until she tells him to. Becca, Hannah's patient, says this isn't how she expected it to go. Mitch assures her that Hannah's the best there is. He tells her to stay positive. In the OR, Hannah tells him not to remove his hand until he feels hers. When he feels her hand, she tells him to let go.
When the baby's out, Hannah tells Mitch to bring the baby to the warmer. She tells Mitch that he did a good job. He says, Thanks, boss. Towards the end of the episode, he finds her in the on-call room. He walks into the room, saying that he was looking all over for her. She says that well you found me. Mitch goes on, saying that was an unbelievable rush in the OR and that he's never had a feeling like that before. He thinks that he got into the wrong specialty. He explains to her that the way she took control of it, the command, the confidence, and them working together. As Hannah starts talking about the other night, she turns around to see Mitch standing directly behind her. He moves his hand to her side. He asks her if this is okay. He says that he's not good at reading minds. Hannah says that maybe you're better than you think. As they edge closer to kiss, they're interrupted by Doris just outside the room, talking about Leo, the frozen criminal that came alive in the middle of the hallway earlier in the episode.
He makes eye contact with Hannah, smiling at her. He whispers to her that he's going to leave the room. At the end of the episode, they both walk out together. Maggie asks them if they're heading out. Mitch says that they are. She asks if they're doing anything interesting. Mitch recommended that they could maybe go get some tea. Hannah says that sounds good. A process server then comes up and asks if he is Dr. Mitch Ripley. Mitch tells the man that it's him. The process server hands him a manila envelope, saying that he's been served. He's confused as to why he's being served. When he opens the envelope, it's revealed that Pawel, Liliana's brother, is suing him for malpractice.
Spin A Yarn, Get Stuck In Your Own String[]
Mitch is in Sharon Goodwin's office with Peter Kalmick talking about his upcoming deposition. He's told that juries are unpredictable and it's best to settle when he's done nothing wrong. They're interrupted when Mitch's phone buzzes and he tells them that he has to get back to the ED. Peter says he'll get him the settlement paperwork. Sharon says it's up to Mitch, who says he'll think it over. Mitch is then introduced to Shayna, who is part of a cult known as HTS. Then a bunch of people come in, making a ruckus in the ED. Security gets rid of them and Maggie tells Mitch that they're cult members. Shayna comes to, wanting her blood pressure meds taken out. Mitch tells her she has a rare cancer on her adrenal gland and he wants to operate as soon as possible. Shayna says she doesn't want surgery or any medical intervention.
Mitch finds Hannah, apologizing for missing their tea again. He asks for a rain check, making peace with the lawsuit. Mitch doesn't like settling because he's a fighter, wanting to fight his way out thinking that settling was wrong and he was only thinking about it because he didn't want the hassle when he's trying to move on with his life. Hannah was also still interested, whispering in his ear that they can make that happen and walking away. Mitch tells Dr. Charles about the cult, explaining how they're refusing medicine and surgery. Charles says he'll talk to Shayna but he can't commit her because of her belief system. Mitch wants him to deprogram her but deprogramming usually involves kidnapping.
Mitch is standing around, looking concerned. Charles tells him that he didn't get anywhere with Shayna. Mitch says that he has an idea. He thinks they should break HIPAA to tell Shayna the truth. People are refusing care because of Dakota's brainwashing. A nurse calls them. Shayna's blood pressure is super high and won't accept medication. She says she doesn't want their poison. Later, Mitch tells Charles that Shayna accepted treatment. But will the other followers ever get it? Charles asks about the lawsuit. Mitch thinks he has to settle. Charles says Pawel has a gambling problem and needs to learn he can't use other people as pawns. Mitch says time he got that message, then.
I Think There's Something You're Not Telling Me[]
Mitch is making fun of Hannah as a baby. She asks him if he has any baby pictures and he claims he has none, saying that they got lost in the "Great Chicago Fire of 1871". They're interrupted by Doris, who tells Mitch that his sparring partner, Sully is back. She asks him if she needs to call security. Mitch says that he's got this. He excuses himself from the conversation with Hannah. Mitch asks if Sully's back to get his lungs checked out. Sully tells him to chill and then reveals Lynne, another person from Mitch's past, who's pregnant.
Sully explains to Mitch that he told Lynne that he ran into him a few weeks back at a bar and grabbed a drink, catching the Bulls game. Mitch asks what seems to be the issue and Sully says she's been in pain. Lynne says she's been experiencing some cramping and that her OB is out of town for the next few weeks and Sully told her that he worked here, hoping that it wasn't a problem. Mitch says it's not a problem at all and tells her to follow him. Mitch brings in Hannah, introducing her to Lynne.
Mitch later is then prepped for the deposition by Sharon and Peter, who recommends that Mitch wears a suit. Sully is still coughing later on. Mitch thinks that Sully should tell Lynne, but he says that he doesn't want to because of the baby, wanting Mitch to keep this to himself. Later, Sully runs out into the hallway, announcing that he thinks Lynne's water broke. Sully begins coughing again and Mitch takes him out of the room. Mitch tells him to take a seat and try to breathe in through his nose and mouth. Sully then coughs up blood and faints. Sully's admitted to Med, and Mitch says that Lynne is fine when Sully comes around. He tells Sully that he's torn the lining of his throat, wanting to get him up to pulmonary so they can look at it. Sully caves and says if they can stop the pain, let's do it.
Mitch walks out of the room and Hannah asks him what's happened with Sully. Mitch shows her the x-ray and she says there's a significant lesion on his lungs. She asks him if it's cancerous and Mitch says he's pretty certain it is. He explains to her that he tried to get Sully worked up and treated a few weeks back, but it didn't go well. Hannah says that she's surprised Lynne didn't mention anything. When she looks at Mitch's face, she realizes that Lynne doesn't know yet. Mitch tells her that Sully doesn't want to say anything, that he kept telling Sully to tell her but he kept dodging it so he backed off. Hannah asks Mitch why he can't sit down with Sully and have an honest conversation with him. Mitch says there's nothing else he can do, that Sully's his patient.
Mitch attends his deposition. The lawyer for Pawel asks about his last two years of high school being missing. Either he was incarcerated or institutionalized. Peter interrupts. This isn't relevant. Afterwards, Mitch beats up a trash can in the locker room. Charles sees. Mitch tells him the lawyer is trying to use his past against him but he's good now. Charles thinks he should settle. Mitch isn't interested.
Sully teases Mitch about wearing a suit and offers to straighten out the guy who is suing him. Mitch says Sully can't be doing anything stupid when he's about to be a dad. Sully doesn't want to hear about telling Lynne the truth. Sully says when his dad went to jail it was the happiest day of his life. So maybe Lynne and the kid would be better off without me. Mitch tells him that Sully is better than his dad. He's here. Sully says so what. Mitch says he knows he wants to be there for his kid, so he has to get treatment. Hannah tells Mitch towards the end of the episode that Lynne's water didn't break and she's fine. Mitch confirms he told her about the cancer. Hannah says Lynne told me about you, mainly that you had questionable hair as a kid. She hopes he'll tell her more someday. He says he has to get Sully up to oncology and walks off, stopping to thank her for today.
Charles talks to Mitch about Sully. Mitch says that Goodwin thinks the best option is to settle. He asks Charles if she knows about his past. Charles says no. Mitch says but you said something to her about settling? He would have fought. Charles says that Mitch's history belongs to him and is his own story to tell.
Get By With A Little Help From My Friends[]
Mitch is up in oncology with Sully, who's getting his first radiation treatment. Sully says to Mitch he hopes he didn't wait too long. Sully thinks Mitch should go out with Hannah. Mitch says she doesn't know his past and wouldn't find that attractive. Lynne shows up and tells him the same thing. Her water breaks just then. Mitch tells Sully you're not going anywhere, who stands up from the chair. Mitch tells him that he'll take her down to Hannah. When Hannah starts her exam, Mitch moves to leave the room but Lynne tells him to stay. Lynne's water hasn't broken yet so Hannah tells her that she'll give her steroids and magnesium. Lynne tries to refuse treatment, arguing that she has to take care of Sully.
Lynne is screaming and in pain. She's now in labor. They can't stop labor and need to remove the stitch. If they don't deliver now her uterus could rupture. Sully shows up and yells about not being informed. Mitch tells him to sit down, shut up, and hold Lynne's hand. There's a lot of blood making it hard for Hannah to see to remove the stitch. Lynne then gives birth in the hybrid OR. The baby doesn't come out breathing so Hannah hands him off to Mitch, who gets the baby breathing again. Later, in the NICU Hannah leaves with Lynne, taking her back to her room. Sully says Hannah was incredible. He tells Mitch he's not that kid anymore and that stuff from the past doesn't matter. Mitch is a freaking superhero and Hannah should be so lucky as to have him.
Mitch catches Hannah in the elevator. He asks her how Lynne was and she says that she's resting. Hannah reflects the question back to him, asking how Sully was. Mitch says that he's over the moon. Mitch tells her that she was great today, that she's got fans for life. Mitch tells Hannah about his past. Mitch tells Hannah that he likes her saying that if he hasn't completely scared her off. Hannah stops him and kisses him, saying that she isn't concerned with who he was before, that she likes who he is. As Mitch goes in for another kiss, the elevator doors open. They chuckle and then Nancy tells Mitch there's incoming, pedestrian vs auto. Mitch exits the elevator and looks back at Hannah, who has a big smile on her face.
I Think I Know You, But Do I Really?[]
Mitch and Hannah were at her apartment having tea before they start teasing each other and Mitch admits he likes her, and has no words before they start to kiss. They're interrupted by Mitch's phone ringing. Hannah wonders whose calling him and he tells her that it's Med. Hannah says he's not on call. He answers the phone, telling them that now wasn't a great time, asking if there was anyone else. He hangs up and tells Hannah that he needs to go in because the night shift got hit with the norovirus, so they're short staffed. He tells her that this was to be continued before he kissed her.
At Med, Mitch and Dean take a patient brought in via helicopter by Loren. Mitch asked what the patient was impaled on before Loren revealed the man had been impaled by deer antlers. Later, Mitch is asleep in the on-call room before he hears Hannah opening the door. He gets up with a groan, saying that he was awake. She laughs and tells him good morning before handing him a coffee. He tells her that she's a lifesaver. She asks how his night went and he tells her above average before she tells him that she'd love to hear about it, but Maggie was looking for him.
Mitch is then introduced to Doug Green, a high-risk prisoner from Statesville who comes in with injuries from an altercation. Hannah teases him and says he gets all the fun. Mitch asks if they gave him anything from the pain, in which he's told that they didn't. Mitch introduces himself to Doug, asking him where he was. Doug said he was at the dentist before Mitch tells him he's at the hospital. He was concerned that he had a head injury, wanting to run more tests but couldn't since the shackles were in the way. He asks the prison guard to remove them, but the guard refuses and claims that Doug's lying and is a cold-blooded murderer.
The guard then claimed that Doug was faking his injuries, refusing to give him any pain meds at Statesville because they thought he was looking for a fix. The guard also claims that Doug got the bruises on his face from starting a fight the day before. Mitch didn't see any bruises on Doug's hand, wondering why he started a fight and didn't defend himself. Doug was so confused that Mitch became concerned that he was experiencing a form of dementia, later ruling out a head injury. Mitch then calls in Dr. Charles to speak with Doug. Charles wanted to speak to Doug alone, but the guard didn't want that. Charles was asking Doug basic questions, only for the guard to interrupt them. Later, Charles felt after the conversation he had with Doug that he had dementia, saying the extra tests that Mitch ordered would be able to detect dementia.
Mitch and Charles then recommended that Doug be moved to a mental hospital in order to receive treatment without worrying about getting another beat up. Mitch later checks in on Sully, who was upstairs getting his chemo treatment. Sully then asks him what he was going to do about Pawel and Mitch says that he'd leave the man alone. Sully argued that didn't sound like him, like the Mitch he used to know always lived for getting payback. Mitch tells Sully that he's changed. Later, Mitch learns that the Attorney General didn't approve moving Doug to a mental hospital, not wanting to risk coming off as easy on criminals during election year. She was sending Doug back to prison and Mitch wasn't happy with that.
Mitch lashed out at Dr. Charles for not doing enough. He didn’t know that Charles has been advocating for better conditions in prison for years. All he knew was that Charles gave up on him when it was Ripley in a juvenile detention center. He tried to argue about it with Charles and the other man refused to get into it again. Later, Mitch tells Maggie that he has to leave because he had a DMV appointment. At the end of the episode, Pawel returned to the hospital after someone in a mask beat him with a bat. He naturally blamed Ripley and Pawel’s sister took his side. Mitch is then asked on the spot if it was him who beat Pawel. Instead of answering, Mitch leaves.
Season 10[]
Mitch continues to be involved with Sully, helping him and Zoey deliver and care for their baby. When Pawel Wapniarski is beaten, Solly confesses to Mitch that he did it. Due to his history with Pawel, Mitch is a suspect and is threatened with arrest, until Sully turns himself in after an intervention from Hannah Asher.
